The Samana Peninsula - Dominican Republic

Samana & Las Terrenas

... nature at its best ...

samana beach

The evergreen peninsula is like one big botanical garden. The ocean view here is simply magnificent and, apart from just enjoying the delightful beach destinations, you can also get on a tour to witness some of the natural wonders that this amazing place has to offer. Some say that Mother Nature has never risen higher when they see some of the enchanting places they can explore here, and the infrastructure is brand new and designed to make your stay on the Samana Peninsula as comfortable as possible. There are tow major town and resort areas to choose from: Samana and Las Terrenas.

... A Vibrant Retreat and a Majestic Place of Adventure ...

samana village

Samana is one of the most amazing places in the Dominican Republic. Located in the southern part of the peninsula, it has retained much of its natural beauty for a long time, having only been explored for the first time in the 18th century by Spanish settlers. Today, it has become a busy place, the town being the home of over 50,000 inhabitants.

There is much to see and enjoy here, as you can relax on the soft, sunny beaches of Las Galeras, explore the majestic mangrove forests or enjoy the beautiful waterfalls that will turn your vacation into a true adventure.

Las Terrenas

... A Small Town with a Huge Tourist Potential..

las terrenas town

The town has been described by many as actually being a small fishing village. With a population of just over 10,000, no one can really argue with that; however, the great potential that this place has for becoming one of the most important tourist destinations in the Caribbean is quite clear, as well.

While exploring the town, you will find that there are a few small hotels and restaurants that blend in with the natural scenery quite beautifully. The three hotels that are considered to be the best choices if you decide to stay in Las Terrenas are Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo, Hotel Residence Playa Colibri and Residencia del Paso. The resorts are considered to be very beautiful and clean, and the grounds are abundant in tall palm trees and beautiful flowers surrounded by lush, green grass.

The beaches are extremely easy to get to, as the entire town is quite small, and consists of only a few narrow roads. If you don't own a car, you can always take a taxi or a motoconcho that will take you literally anywhere in no time at all.

The Climate in the Samana Peninsula

... No green paradise without rain ...

samana peninsula weather

With its warm climate and the presence of the ever-present, soothing trade winds, the town and its beaches can be considered as a perfect place for a vacation all year round. You will never really get tired of the calm, inviting beach locations that will offer you an amazing experience throughout your stay, and with places like Playa Rincon and Cayo Levantado at your disposal, you will likely have a vacation that you won't easily forget.

The difference between summer and winter is only marked by a few degrees, and, unlike other tropical locations, the peninsula is not showered by heavy rain in certain periods of the year. In fact, the annual rainfall is quite moderate, and you never really have anything to worry about except how quickly you can get a nice, golden tan.

Whale Watching in Samana

... encounter the giants of the sea..

whale watching

Even better than exploring the soft, sandy beaches and allowing yourself to relax under the warm sunlight is the opportunity to see some of the rarest aspects of nature in a tour organized by some of the main resorts on the peninsula.

Between January and March of every year, hunchback whales visit the waters around the peninsula to give birth to their young. The memorable experience of watching these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is an opportunity that should never be ignored.

Some of the more important hotels and tour agencies organize tours to witness the event, allowing you to see the whales up close. Of course, by law, all tours are bound to certain rules, particularly about respecting a certain distance between the boat and the whales, so as not to disturb the creatures.

Options are also available to combine a whale watching tour with a trip to locations such as Cayo Levantado, where you can enjoy more of the natural beauty of Samana.

You are free to explore and enjoy some of the most fascinating places in the world if you visit either Samana or Las Terrenas, and the experience will most certainly be more than memorable.
